Vivo leads in three of the five biggest Brazilian Area Codes

 

Vivo ended 2011 leading the cellular market share inside 29 of the 67 Area Codes(DDD) in Brazil. Claro and TIM lead in 16 Area Codes and Oi in 6.

 

 

 

This text analyzes the competition for market share inside the five biggest Area Codes in Brazil.

Vivo is the leader in three Area Codes (11, 31 and 51), Claro leads inside A. Code 21 and Oi in 81.

 

 

Vivo leads Area Code 11 (São Paulo)

 

 

 

Vivo was the first operator to break into the state of São Paulo (Band A) and remained in the first position of the market share ranking inside the metropolitan region of São Paulo (Area Code 11).

 

This leadership is being threatened by TIM, which reduced the distance that separates the operator from Claro to 754 thousand cellulars in the end of 2011. In the prepaid segment TIM overtook Vivo in Dec/11 reaching the leadership in prepaid market share inside this Area Code.

 

Claro lost market share inside Area Code 11 and Oi, after conquer market share of 19.9% in 1Q11, ended the year holding 19.0% of market share.

 

 

Claro leads inside Area Code 21 (Rio de Janeiro)

 

 

 

Claro is the market share leader inside the Area Code that includes the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro. The company was the second operator to break into this market (Band B) and leads prepaid and postpaid.

 

TIM was the operator that gained more market shares in 2011, overtaking Oi. Vivo and Oi lost market share in 2011.

 

 

Vivo leads in Area Code 31 (Belo Horizonte)

 

 

 

Vivo, which acquired Telemig Celular, is the market share leader in the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte. Oi threatened this leadership in 1Q11, but lost m. share in the other quarters of the year.

 

TIM was the operator to gain more market share in 2011.

 

 

Oi leads Area Code 81 (Recife)

 

 

Oi remained as the leader inside Area Code 81, which covers the metropolitan region of Recife. TIM and Claro compete strongly for the second position. Claro ended 2011 holding 29.6% of market share, against Tim's 28.7%.

 

Vivo, which recently broke into this market, didn't gain market share in 2011.

 

 

Vivo leads Area Code 51 (Porto Alegre)

 

 

Inside Area Code 51, which includes the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, the first and second operators to break into the market (Vivo and Claro) keep their position up to now. The main competition happens for the third position. Oi ended the year holding 13.8% of market share and TIM 13.3%. Oi is 3rd in prepaid and TIM in postpaid.
