Pay TV and fixed broadband analyzed in the ten biggest Brazilian capital cities
Brazil ended Nov/13 counting 17.9 million pay TV accesses, being 11.1 million via satellite (DTH) and 6.8 million cable TV.
The entrance of Embratel in DTH in 2009 set fire in the competition inside this market, that started to register bigger growth than cable TV.
In Nov/13, SKY was responsible for 48.1% of the DTH accesses in Brazil, Embratel for 32.2% and others (GVT, Oi, Vivo) for the remaining 19.7%.

DTH growth happened mainly in areas where cable TV doesn't exist. Cable TV service had its expansion contained by the lack of new authorizations.
The new SeAC authorizations, that allow companies like NET to increase its operations to more cities, didn't change this scenario in 2013, though. Cable TV may repeat the net adds of 0.7 million registered in 2012.
On the other hand, DTH showed deceleration in 2013. It is likely to present about the double of cable TV net adds in the year, however, this result is inferior to the 2.9 million registered in 2012.
Embratel/Net is market share leader in Brazilian pay TV, holding 53.5% of the market, followed by SKY (29.7%). The presence of NET in cable TV holding market share of 88% of the accesses inside this segment (Nov/13), helped the group to reach the leadership in fixed broadband market share in 3Q13. The company has 29.6% of the accesses.
Pay TV and Fixed Broadband
Cable TV is an important component to increase fixed broadband service in Brazil, as illustrated ne the image below, which shows a comparison between densities of fixed broadband accesses (SCM) and cable TV participation in the total of pay TV accesses inside the 10 biggest Brazilian capitals cities (population), in the 3rd quarter of 2013 (3Q13).

Note: SCM accesses include fixed broadband data accesses (>256 kbps) and narrowband (< 256 kbps) and are used in this commentary like an approximation to the fixed broadband accesses in capital cities.
These ten capital cities can be divided into two groups:

Embratel/Net is pay TV leader inside 7 of the 10 biggest Brazilian capital cities, just right where cable TV represents more than 40% of the pay TV accesses.

Embratel/Net is also the leader in fixed broadband accesses (SCM) inside five of these capital cities, only losing to Vivo (48.6%) in São Paulo and to GVT (37.4%) in Curitiba.
SKY is the pay TV leader inside other 3 capital cities (Fortaleza, Salvador and Recife). The operator make a bet on LTE to offer fixed broadband and had 2.2% of the market share in Brasília in 3Q13.

Note: The data before 4Q12 weren't shown because they have inconsistencies in the figures published by Oi.
In these three capital cities in the Northeast, the leadership in fixed broadband is shared by Oi and GVT.

Oi is the fixed broadband market share leader in Fortaleza and Salvador. GVT is first in Recife.

We have to give emphasis to GVT's growth in pay TV, having a solution that combines DTH with a return channel though broadband. Launched in 2011, GVT have already conquered more than 10% of market share in Curitiba, Fortaleza and Recife.
