Vivo, Claro and Oi are mobile leaders in 4Q13

 

In the fourth quarter of 2013 (4Q13), Vivo led four of the seven indicators followed by Teleco about mobile telephony. Claro was the leader in two and Oi in one.

Since 2007, Teleco follows the performance of mobile operators measuring it through thse seven indicators.

 

Since 1Q13, quality is evaluated through the indicator of complaints made to Anatel. In April 2012, Anatel suspended the report of the indicators about the accomplishment of quality targets by operators.

 

The following shows the results for each onde os these indicators in 4Q13.

 

 

Market Share: Vivo leads, but loses market share in prepaid

 

Vivo, the biggest mobile operator in Brazil, ended 2013 counting 77.2 million mobile accesses and market share of 28.49%.

 

 

Claro was the only one to show growth in market share in 4Q13.

Vivo kept the market share leadership inside two regions, in 11 of the 27 states (including Brasilia) and in 28 of the 67 area codes.

In 4Q13, TIM conquered the leadership in Alagoas (area code 82) from Claro, but lost it in Paraíba (83) to Oi.

Vivo's loss of market share happens due to the adoption of a more restrict rule to turn off inactive accesses and an effort for the migration of cellular base to postpaid.

 

Vivo was overtaken by Claro in prepaid market share in 4Q13, starting to occupy the third position inside this segment. TIM continues to lead prepaid market.

In the postpaid segment, Vivo continues to amplify its market share leadership.

Growth: Claro leads net adds in the quarter and in the year

 

Claro led growth in the quarter, followed by Vivo and TIM.

Claro led for having presented a good performance inside prepaid segment.

 

 

Vivo was the postpaid leader by holding net adds superior to all the other operators altogether, but also reported negative net adds of -924 thousand prepaid accesses.

 

 

Net Revenue: Vivo and Claro lead growth in the quarter

 

Vivo kept the leadership after having revenue of R$6.1 billion in 4Q13 and growth of 6.0% in comparison with 3Q13.

Claro presented the biggest growth in the quarter and also in the comparison between 4Q13 with 4Q12.

 

Mobile oprators revenues are suffering the impact of the reduction of VUM promoted by Anatel.

 

 

ARPU: Vivo amplifies ARPU leadership

 

A more adjusted base, with a more restrict rule to turn off prepaid accesses, contributed for the growth of Vivo's ARPU.

Vivo's data ARPU (R$ 8.0) represented 32.3% of the total ARPU (R$ 24.8) in 4Q13.

 

ARPU avlues informed by operators aren't totally comparable because they use different rule to make its determination:

The minutes pf use use by client (MOU) in Brazil continue to show growth in the quarter.

Profitability: Oi leads EBITDA Margin

 

Oi led EBITDA margin in the quarter sue to the inclusion of the sale revenue of Globenet while calculating the EBITDA. Without this revenue, Oi's EBITDA margin would reach 27.7%.

Note: In 2Q11 a modification was made in thee rule to evaluate the profitability of the indicators calculated by TELECO, starting to be considered the group's EBITDA margin gathering fixed and mobile operations, This modification was necessary because Vivo, Claro and TIM report thius indicator only this way.

 

 

Quality: Vivo is the leader

 

Since 1Q13, quality is evaluated through the indicator of complaints made to Anatel. In April 2012, Anatel suspended the report of the indicators about the accomplishment of quality targets by operators.

 

Vivo and TIM showed the smallest number of complaints to Anatel by 1,000 accesses during the year. Anatel didn't have reported December's data yet by date when this article was writen.

 

 

Coverage: Claro continues to lead

 

Claro kept the leadership in covered population (91.5%), conquered in 4Q12.
